Behind the Series: When Life Fuels Art

Peach Blossom Retreat Bed-and-Breakfast

I didn’t suddenly imagine the Peach Blossom Retreat; it grew out of years of memories, encounters, and places that stitched themselves into the vision of a bed-and-breakfast that would eventually become the heart of the Jenna Ross Thriller Series.

The Visionaries

Years ago when I worked in Washington, D.C., I knew a young married couple whose dream was to own a bed-and-breakfast in rural Maryland. They were determined planners who never took their eyes off their goal. They talked incessantly about their small successes and next steps. Nobody listened to their chatter except me, and I silently celebrated with them from the sidelines. It took them seven years, but they reached their goal. Their managers and coworkers were shocked by their seemingly abrupt departure when the couple pooled their resources, emptied their retirement funds, and walked away with a deed in their pocket and a vision in their hearts.

Our Travels

Their courage inspired me, and because of them, my husband and I enjoyed bed-and-breakfasts in our travels when we weren’t camping. Each inn offered more than just a place to stay; it offered a glimpse into the personalities, the quirks, and the warmth of the people who ran them. Those stays left a lasting impression.

The Perfect Barn

When we were considering moving to Georgia, we inspected a house for sale with a massive barn on the property. The barn was in surprisingly good shape, complete with a loft studio apartment above it. As soon as we saw it, we imagined its potential for wedding venues, family celebrations, community events. If the house itself had been a closer fit for us, we would have jumped at the chance to make that vision real.

The House Past Its Prime

Remember the fixer-upper we found that would have been a perfect bed-and-breakfast if it hadn’t been condemned and razed to the ground?  (Check the June 27, 2025 blog titled When Life Hands You Peaches. Scroll back in the blogs to read!)

Abandoned house

Life Fuels Art

The Peach Blossom Retreat is the culmination of those random touchpoints. It’s the place where all those seeds of inspiration finally found fertile ground. In Jenna Ross’s world, the inn isn’t just a business; it’s a refuge, a gathering place, and a setting full of charm and danger in equal measure.

So while the Peach Blossom Retreat may exist only on the page, it’s built on the foundation of real-life dreams, discoveries, and “what ifs.” That’s what makes writing about it such a joy. It’s both familiar and new; imagined and remembered.

Have you ever stayed at a bed-and-breakfast that left an impression on you? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

You keep reading; I’ll keep writing!

My Author Year Seven: The Year I’ll be Predictable

You know when a joke is hilarious in your head? Thank you for laughing at mine.

Boozy Book Club Nov 2024

2024 An Exciting End to a Great Year

After a year full of exciting events, my last one was not my usual arts and crafts festival. I met the co-leaders of a local book club at an arts and crafts festival in November. They asked me if I would be interested in talking to their book club. I might have squealed a little. HECK, YEAH!

After we met at a local tavern, I talked a little and listened (and laughed) a lot. They were definitely a fun group!  One of the Bookies (is that an okay name for a Book Club member when the Book Club doesn’t have an “official” name?) said she reads the first few pages of a book, and if it doesn’t grab her, then she drops it.

Challenge Accepted. I read the first page of I Always Wanted to Be a Spy, and she stopped me before I could turn the page.

“I WANT TO READ THAT BOOK!”

I learned a new skill; I shut up.

FarmerMan was recently dubbed Labor by a vendor at an arts and crafts show. He said she wasn’t wrong, but I think Senior Staff would look better on a T-shirt. Ammi right?

Senior Staff sauntered out to his truck and returned with eight copies of I Always Wanted to Be a Spy. The eighth Bookie left early, but she had her book with her, in case you’re an editor or love numbers, and counted the Bookies in the photo.

I track every event we attend and mark them as Do Not Return/No Fun or Must Go/Fun. Book Clubs are officially on my Must Go/Fun list.

An Exciting Beginning to 2025

Barrett Book Shop

Superhero fighting inflation

Inflation is hitting us all. It’s definitely on my Do Not Return/No Fun List, but I’m fighting it, one book at a time.

For starters, when the printing costs for paperbacks rose, the retailers and book distributors raised their prices, and thanks to that stuff-rolls-downhill effect, my costs for paperbacks went even higher. I’ve fought back.

All the paperback books, signed by the author, are available on Barrett Book Shop with FREE SHIPPING. (US Continental)

Another cost saving for readers (and listeners!) on Barrett Book Shop is Bundles of books. You’ll find Paperback (NEW!), Ebook, and Audiobook (NEW!) bundles.

In fact, would you like a bargain bundle of four or more paperback, ebook, or audio books that you don’t see? Send me an email! That’s what two other readers did over the holidays, and there are two new bundles available for everyone on Barrett Book Shop!

2025 Events

  • March 15-16 CALICO SPRING ARTS & CRAFTS, Moultrie GA
  • March 29 FIRE ANT FESTIVAL, Ashburn GA (New!)
  • April 26 GEORGIA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL, Reynolds GA

Paperback books are always bundled for you at all events, and custom bundles are a breeze!

That’s it for this month, at least so far. I have plans…

Then and Now

We’ve hauled my books to local Christmas arts and crafts festivals every year since 2019 and had fun all along the way!

A photo from a festival in 2019 popped up in a feed on social media, and the contrast between then and now made me smile.

Then: 2019

My main books were the two Donut Lady books. My T-shirt says Sprinkles are for Winners.

Set up Mistletoe Market 2019
Mistletoe Market 2019

When life was simple: one table and one bin for books.

I love how tidy my tables were in 2019.

Elevate Artisans Market was my first arts and crafts event, and I instantly fell in love with being outside and talking to readers. We brought a second table from home after we set up the evening before the event because I was on a corner. That was my first of many learnings in the arts and crafts events world.

I didn’t use my tent a month later at the Mistletoe Market because my assigned spot was on the sidewalk, and we couldn’t anchor the tent. I added a Christmasy tablecloth and went for efficiency with one table. It was a little nippy, but my hands were cold. My pink gloves add a festive touch, don’t you think?

Now: 2024

Books at Elevate Artisans 2024
Elevate Artisans Market 2024

I love Elevate Artisans. Our weather was perfect, and I chatted with oodles of readers. The younger crowd is discovering my books!

Mistletoe Market 2024
Mistletoe Market 2024

Our tent is on the street, not the sidewalk, but if the wind blows, we have weights for the tent to keep it from becoming airborne.  We did put our back table on the sidewalk, though, because it was too low on the street for people to browse.

By 2024, I increased to 4 tables with books semi-neatly arranged everywhere on tables and my bookrack. I added a sidewalk sandwich board – Meet the Author, a Barrett Book Shop garden flag, and a second banner for my tent to accommodate any spots that had two paths of traffic for shoppers.

I’ve discovered there is no better research than meeting with readers in person. I can spot a reader because they slow down and search for a book that interests them. Their gaze becomes more intense when they spot a book they like, which is great cover feedback. I listen as they tell me who their favorite authors are, which helps me understand what they like to read. All great research!

It’s a thrill when a reader tells me they bought a book or an entire series from me last year and asks me what they should read next. That’s easy because I know exactly what they like!

Mistletoe Market 2024 took the award for being the absolutely coldest event we’ve ever attended. It was 21 °F when we set up that morning, and I wore long johns and an extra three layers for warmth. After Senior Staff Man took this photo, I immediately put on my heavy winter coat.

Maybe I should have put more thought into the color of my sweatshirt because with all the layers, I look kind of marshmallowy. But who cares? Layers are for Winners!

Rolling with the Punches

We have an addition to our favorite festivals: St. Marys Seafood Festival in St. Marys, Georgia!

St Marys Seafood Festival smaller Nov 2024

Not only is it one of our favorites, but it is number one on my list of What to Do When Things Go Wrong.

After we reached the campground the night before the festival and were transferring everything from the fifth wheel to the truck so we’d be ready to go in the morning, we realized we’d forgotten the cash box.

Can you imagine being a vendor at an event without a cash box? The possibility of not having a place to store cash after people paid or worse, not having change ready when people paid with large bills was terrifying. We made a fast trip to Walmart, our go-to place when we need something for a festival, and found a small cashbox with a key and cobbled together small bills for change from our wallets. Good enough; crisis averted.

When we were setting up early the next morning, I realized I’d left my Writer ball cap at home. If you’ve seen any of my photos of festivals or seen me at any festival in the past several years, you know I ALWAYS wear my Writer ball cap. Depending on the weather, I can count on it to shade my eyes, keep my head dry when it rains, keep my hair from blowing in my face when I’m signing books, and identify me to readers at the festivals. Yes, I’m the Author.

Writer ball cap
My much-loved Writer ball cap

Not even Walmart could help. I tried to keep a stiff up lip and soldier on; after all, the Meet the Author sandwich board sign helped identify me, but MY HAIR!

The vendor next to us gave me a hat after I asked him how much it cost. Now I have an emergency Writer hat that doesn’t actually have Writer on it, but I might have a patch made sometime.

We loved our spot. The festival was coordinated by the Kiwanis Club of St Marys and was organized, smoothly run, and well-staffed. Can you tell how generous our booth was? We had enough room between us and our closest neighbors to set up a side table on the right side of our tent for readers to browse at leisure.

We chatted with readers and sold books all morning. When we had enough of a break around two o’clock to eat lunch, we realized… you’ve already guessed, right? I’d forgotten to pack our sandwiches, an apple, cookies, and drinks for lunch.

Kraken Coffee & Kitchen St Marys, GA
Kraken Coffee & Kitchen Co.

Thank goodness Kraken Coffee & Kitchen Co. was right behind us and was open! We split a tasty chicken salad sandwich.

After we finished our lunch, a couple who were eating slices of a delicious looking pie bought three books from us. While I signed their books, I asked them about their dessert. It was bacon bourbon cheesecake and, no surprise, it came from our new favorite cafe, Kraken Coffee & Kitchen Co. We had bacon bourbon cheesecake for our afternoon snack. Cheers!

When the festival was over, our book bins were much lighter. It was a glorious day, and we’re definitely going back to St. Marys.

p.s. We now have a checklist for final packing and set up.

Hog Wild About Festivals

Two Hams

The local Piggly Wiggly Super Market was a sponsor of the Ellaville Spring Festival. The Big Boss showed up to see how things were going. My tip: Never pass up the opportunity for a photo op with a Big Celebrity. Can you tell I’m in Hog Heaven?

This spring has been a great season of Arts and Crafts Festivals for us! We’ll be taking the summer off because it’s too hot in Georgia to spend an entire day out in the heat and humidity with the summer gnats.

What I’ve learned this Spring

  • There are still a lot of paperback readers that love meeting an author and buying  signed books
  • I talked to several people who enjoy audiobooks; I added the goal to have all my books in audiobooks by the end of the summer.
  • People are nice (but I already knew that)
  • Always buy lunch from a food truck
  • Vendors are a helpful bunch and are willing to share what they know
  • Size matters: I had changed the font size of many of my books to a slightly smaller font to avoid raising the price for my books (printing costs are skyrocketing!), but there are many people of all ages that need the little larger font, so I switched back to the  original size and narrowed the margins instead.
  • My feet hurt after standing all day on concrete. FarmerMan’s solution: the chef’s mat we have in the kitchen. He’s brilliant.

Georgia Strawberry Festival

Double the Fun

Sales on Two Sides

Strawberry Festival Apr 2024 smaller

When we arrived at the Strawberry Festival at 6:00 am, we had to have an extra splash of coffee when we realized our assigned site was in the middle of the road, and Strawberry Festival visitors would be walking past our booth on the “front” side and the “back”.

Challenge accepted, Strawberry Festival! Not all the vendors had the luxury of being able to take advantage of foot traffic from the front and back of their tents, but we revised our “usual” set up to be approachable from both sides.

We had our tables and books organized and were on our way to grab a bite of breakfast when the cafe on the corner opened at 7:00 am. Note how relaxed I appear in our early morning photo. “We got this.”

It Takes Two

Strawberry Festival Apr 2024 Takes Two smaller

Our usual, smooth routine is that I chat with readers and sign books while FarmerMan processes payments and puts the book(s) into one of our spiffy Barrett Book Shop sacks that are prefilled with a Barrett Book Shop postcard. It’s quite nicely orchestrated, and we’ve done it many times.

Our chaotic routine at the Strawberry Festival resulted in the two of us switching sides regularly, sometimes midstream.  FarmerMan had the double duty of talking to readers and managing payments while I talked to readers and signed books. Both of us grabbed Barrett Book Shop sacks and popped in books, sometimes at the same time for the same book.

Our one saving grace was that for the first time ever, I had the brilliant idea to sign every single book, a total of over 175 books, while we waited for the Strawberry Festival to begin. After each sale, I only had to add the person’s name and a short note, which was usually my tagline: You keep reading; I’ll keep writing.

Two Events

In addition to the Strawberry Festival, I was also participating  with 41 other authors in a group online Thriller Sale. (The answer is 42. For more explanation, read my blog about the sale, For Thriller Readers.)

I had emailed Draft to Digital (D2D), my favorite distributor of my books to retailers, telling them about the thriller group. Somehow, my thriller, I Always Wanted to be a Spy, was inadvertently left off the list of books. By me: I was the guilty party.

A kind-hearted D2D promotion coordinator, Megan, sent me an email to say she didn’t see my book on the list. After a brief, private moment of embarrassment, I sent her the information. Crisis averted, thanks to Megan.

When a lovely young woman who was the same height as me, approached my table and smiled, I said, “You must be a reader.”

She said, “I better be; I’m promoting your book this weekend.”

<INSERT LOUD SCREAM> again me.

What are the odds? Megan and Me.

Side note: any respectable Promotions Coordinator from Georgia would wear a hat crocheted like a strawberry and a Strawberry Shortcake shirt when she took her daughter to the Strawberry Festival, ammi right?

Do you remember Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

Thrillyourereader apr 2024 42

“The Answer is 42” is a super ancient reference to Douglas Adams’ 1979 novel, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Deep Thought, the supercomputer,  was tasked to answer The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

After processing the question for over seven million years, Deep Thought revealed… The Answer is 42.

When a group of thriller authors banded together to create a promotion of FREE thriller books April 27-29, one of the (younger) authors innocently asked, HOW MANY BOOKS WILL BE FREE?

The organizer said, “The answer is 42.”

And the (ancient) authors lost it.

Inside or Outside?

Which is your preference?

When it comes to Arts and Crafts festivals, outside wins for me, hands down, EXCEPT when it’s raining. When we’ve been caught in a passing shower, the Hubs and I have said for years, “We’ve been wet before; we’ll be wet again.”

However, books don’t do well in overnight dew or a little shower, much less a downpour. We watched the weather closely for the Calico Arts and Crafts Festival, and as the chance of precipitation and thunderstorms rose, the more we worried about the books.

I had originally requested an outdoor spot, but ten days before the Calico Arts and Crafts, I sent a frantic email to the organizer asking to be moved indoors.  If you’ve read the Grid Down Survival series, you know that Rosalie is the “Weather Girl.” I channeled my inner Rosalie.

The organizer relieved my worries when she graciously switched us to indoors. Almost all the vendors, indoors and outdoors, set up Friday afternoon to be ready for the Saturday morning event. A terrible thunderstorm with destructive wind blew through late Friday night, and quite a few tents were destroyed. It was tragic.

I was relieved we were inside at the Calico Arts and Crafts Festival, but we had to modify our usual setup. what do you think?

We had a glorious time talking to so many great readers from Georgia and Florida who went home with dry books! The event coordinator had everything well-organized, including an organization of young men on Friday afternoon who unloaded our bins of books for us at our assigned vendor spot!

As usual, we picked up brilliant tips from the vendors around us. Calico is on our Definitely Return list for their next event in November.

Our set up at the Peanut Proud Festival was our usual with our canopy tent and my banner on the front of the tent. It got a little windy in Blakely that day, but the organizers were remarkable hosts, and we had a wonderful time.

We were surprised how many readers from Georgia and Alabama braved the wind gusts and went home with a new book or two. Amazingly, our tent didn’t blow away.  Peanut Proud is another event on our Definitely Return list for next year.

But while I created the sticker, I wondered about the history of rocking chairs…a natural progression, wouldn’t you think?

History of Rocking Chairs

Here’s a rabbit hole for the fascinating story of rocking chairs History of Rocking Chairs. I’d forgotten about the therapeutic uses of the rocking chair. Add a book, and you’re relaxing your back and going on an adventure with your favorite characters!

History of Donuts

Donuts have a much longer history than rocking chairs. Here’s what the Britannica has to say on the topic of donuts: https://www.britannica.com/topic/doughnut

My favorite was the tale of the sailor, Hanson Gregory, who was said to have pierced a hole in the pastry with the ship’s wheel during a storm, which reminded me of the pirate in another series… but that’s ANOTHER story!

Elevate Artisans Market 2019 to 2023

Elevate Artisans Market is my favorite event. It’s held every year on the Saturday closest to Halloween. The event is hosted at an Alpaca Farm by an amazingly energetic farmer and talented artisan, Della Lovett.

2019

Elevate All Set Up 2019 First year

I had five books in 2019. It was my first in-person event at an arts and crafts show, and I  tried to make my two tables as neat and eye-pleasing as possible. I’m not sure why I didn’t take advantage of all the space under my tent, though. Doesn’t it look like it might be a little cramped for space where our chairs are behind the tables? Maybe I thought it would be more welcoming for visitors if there was room for them under the tent, but they’d have to be short. Hopefully, we raised the tent before the tall FarmerMan, who takes care of the $ transactions and everything else except the author-stuff  made his way to his chair.

It must have been warm because I’m in a short-sleeved shirt. Note that I am not wearing a ball cap…definitely back in the day!

What did I learn? I discovered how much I loved to ask people what they liked to read. I made friends and to my amazement, I sold books.

2020

Elevate 2020 clipped_edited-2 smaller

The weather was cooler in 2020. I’m wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt under my Halloween shirt, and it must have been windy because we have our gallon jugs filled with water to keep the tent from blowing away.

I have three books neatly arranged on the table that is a little closer to the front of the tent and books on a table behind me. Those must be the rare collector’s items because they’re in a rack not within reach of anyone, not even me, because my chair is blocking me. I’m not certain what the purpose of the table with lone Halloween sack on it was. Maybe it was for all the candy.

What did I learn? I dearly love to listen to their excitement when people talk about what they read. I watched  people’s faces as they looked at my book covers and was fascinated by what attracted them.

2021 and 2022

Elevate 2021 smaller Barrett ELEVATE Arts and Crafts Oct 2022

2021 was cold, and 2022 was rainy, but visitors braved the elements and showed up. I had three then four series and more books. I’ll never be a decorator, but I tried to carefully arrange my table with only a few books, so it didn’t look too crowded.

What did I learn? Other than what a patient, kind-hearted man FarmerMan is for going to all these events with me, I’m surprised at how many readers really love a paperback. Ebooks might be cheaper and audiobooks might be better for a commuter, but there are a lot of people who prefer to hold a paperback while they read.

2023

Elevate 2023 smaller

It was cool in the morning but heated up in the afternoon. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. I had books all over the place. I tried to be relatively neat, but with five series of 30 different books, I had books stacked and stashed everywhere.

What did I learn? I’ve been surprised every year at how many people tell me they read Historical Fiction. I realized after the event was over what a huge opportunity I’ve missed. I’ve never once asked anyone what time period or era of Historical Fiction they read. I’ll fix that.
